A study on the duties of dental assistants and hygienists

Abstract
From April to August, 1983, this survey was conducted on the duties and education of dental assistants and hygienists. A total of 430 responses to questionaire were received from dentists at both public and private dental clinics and centers, and the results obtained are as follows.
1. The duties of the dental assistants included patient preparation(88. 6 % ), x-ray processing and mounting (64.9 %), oral health education (64.2 %) and photography(60.2 %) .
2. The duties of the dental hygienists included the followings: fluoride application(89. 1 %), charting(78. 6 %), x-ray taking(77. 7 %), oral examination(76. 5 %), removal of temporary crowns(74.9 % ), scaling-subgingival (71.4 % ), medical history taking(71.2 % ), alginate impression (71.2 %), removal of rubber dam(69.8 % ), polishing of amalgam(69.3%), removal of perio pack(68.6%), perio pack replacement(67.9 % ), placement of rubber dam(62.8 % ), removal of matrix band (60.2%), removal of temporary fillings(59.8 % ), prophylaxis( 59. 1 scalingsupragingival(58.4%), placement of matrix band(54.9%), removal of sutures (53.7%), placement of temporary fillings(50.7%), and topical anesthetic application (50.2%). The topical drug application, construction of temporary crowns, desensitization, extraction of deciduous teeth and placement of temporary crowns were also included in 41.2-49.8% of the total.
3. The duties of the dentists included placement of cement base, placement of amalgam, carving of amalgam, caries activity test, perio pack placement, root planning, rubber base impression. simple amalgam cavity preparation, placement of root canal dressing, consultation request, placement of gingival retraction cord, laboratory examination request, vitality test, pit and fissure sealant, soft tissue curettage, local anesthesia injection(infiltration), local anesthesia injection (block), prescription of medication, placement of sutures and Z.O.P. impression-edentulous from 88.6-100.0%.
T 4. 75.8% of the total showed a positive response to the necessity of basic dental care and oral health education for dental hygienists at health centers and school infirmaries.
A portion 16.0 % showed no response, and 8.2 % showed negative response to the above mentioned requirements.
5. 66.5% of the total showed a positive response to the necessity of an educational system for dental helpers.
A portion 11.4% showed no response, 22.1% showed negative response to the above mentioned requirements.
6. 72.8% of the total showed a positive response to the necessity of special education for nurse¢¥s assistants.
A portion 5.6 % showed no response, and 21.6% showed negative response to the above mentioned requirements.
7. 70.2% of the total showed a positive response to the necessity of a shortterm educational system for training nurse¢¥s assistants to be elevated to dental nurse¢¥s assistants.
A portion 9.1 % showed no response, and 20.7 % showed negative response to the above mentioned requirements.
8. The longer the length of experience, the higher was the number of respondents who said that they have to do all the duties themselves. (p>0.05)
